City Bank and Friendship Partner to Strengthen Climate Resilience through Mangrove Afforestation in Coastal Bangladesh
City Bank has partnered with Friendship to strengthen climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and community livelihoods in the southern coastal regions of Bangladesh through a large-scale mangrove afforestation initiative.
Under this partnership, the project will plant 75,000 mangrove trees in Paikgacha upazila of Khulna, helping to protect embankments and coastal communities from tidal surges, erosion, and sea-level rise, while also creating new livelihood opportunities for climate-affected families.
This Mangrove Afforestation initiative directly supports Bangladesh’s national goals for climate adaptation and carbon sequestration. By restoring degraded coastal ecosystems, the project contributes to biodiversity protection and long-term environmental sustainability.
In alignment with City Bank’s CSR focus on empowering women and youth, two of the most high-potential yet underrepresented groups, the project will also generate livelihood opportunities that engage and uplift local women and young people, fostering resilience and enabling them to play an active role in protecting the environment and their communities.
