City Bank Launches Bangladesh’s First Carbon Credit Market-Supported Biogas Clean Cooking CSR Program
City Bank has launched Project Green Flame, the first Carbon Credit Market-supported CSR program in Bangladesh, marking a groundbreaking step toward sustainable rural development. The initiative combines biogas technology, carbon finance, and community livelihood enhancement to drive environmental and social impact in rural communities.
The project brings together a consortium of specialized partners: Development Program Initiative (DPI) as the Lead Partner, ATEC Global as the Technology and Carbon Implementation Partner, Ekshathe Foundation as the Implementation Partner, and Cultivera as the Strategic Partner.
Through Project Green Flame, City Bank will install household biogas digesters in the districts of Bogura and Sirajganj, enabling rural families to convert livestock manure into clean cooking gas and organic fertilizer. This innovative model leverages ATEC Global’s voluntary carbon market mechanism to reduce household costs while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving indoor air quality, and creating new income opportunities for women and youth.
The project will further introduce a bio-slurry buy-back model, allowing rural households to sell organic fertilizer produced from waste — transforming what was once discarded into a sustainable source of income.
In alignment with City Bank’s long-term CSR focus on women and youth empowerment, Project Green Flame demonstrates the Bank’s commitment to sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive growth. Through impactful partnerships and innovative models, City Bank continues to strengthen its role as a progressive, purpose-driven financial institution — a true growth partner of Bangladesh.
